One Direction fans are either having their hearts torn apart or sewn back together.

Since Zayn Malik left the famous boy band two years ago, “Directioners” have been losing faith in the band getting back to where it was when it first started. Little by little, each member began to take on their own paths and sign with other record labels, going completely solo. Zayn, 24, was the first one to start the trend, leaving the band in March of 2015 to join RCA Records and create his first solo album, “Mind Of Mine.”

The band then decided to take a brief hiatus, promising fans that it would not be the end. Instead, they all chose to move forward and look back at the band as a fond memory.

Niall Horan, 23, was next, dropping his hit single “This Town” back in September.

Louis Tomlinson, 25, then partnered with Steve Aoki to drop his hit single “Just Hold On” in December.

But the one single many One Direction fans are probably taking to heart is Harry Styles’ “Sign of the Times,” which he released in the beginning of April, the first single of his new, upcoming solo-album, “Harry Styles.” Harry, 23, was probably the most popular member of One Direction, being that he was one of the most ‘mysterious’ members, which he spoke about in his recent interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

Now, Styles signed on with the same label as One Direction, Columbia Records, for a three-album deal.

When Harry debuted his new song, One Direction fans went wild. “Sign of the Times” is from the point of view of a mother who is dying while giving birth to her child. She only has five minutes to tell her son how to grow up and be successful. “Sign of the Times” is very different from his previous music in One Direction, all of which were very pop-based songs. This song has shown the world that Harry will not be following the norm, especially after his performance on “Saturday Night Live,” which received stellar reviews. Styles also surprised fans and sang another song from the album, “Ever Since New York,” on “SNL” that night.

With these songs, Styles has been dropping hints about the feel of his upcoming self-titled album. He claims it will have an ’80s vibe, going back to when rock was most popular. This sound sets him apart from the other members of One Direction and from his previous music altogether. Billboard even said “Sign of the Times” had “50 years of rock history in one song.” “Harry Styles” will most likely have a cool and chilled vibe, making a very mellow yet upbeat album.

Even though Styles went solo, he will definitely be successful; the reviews from his first single can already tell that much. But his loyal One Direction fans will pull him through regardless of what the album sounds like. Looking at his album from the perspective of this single, it’s going to be something this generation hasn’t heard of yet. Even more so, it’ll be something they’ll love. Older generations are catching a glimpse of what good old rock music sounded like back when they were young.

Harry was trending worldwide on Twitter when the song was released. Fans of the song made some comments saying, “If a Beatle had released ‘Sign of the Times’, the world would be asking, ‘greatest song of the century?’” Another fan said, “I hear a lot of opinions about music, and I listen to them, but anyone who says Harry Styles’ single isn’t a smash really makes my eyes roll.” One other congratulated Harry, saying, “Congrats to Harry Styles for he didn’t need a radio-friendly pop song to have his debut in the top 5 of the BBH100. Brilliant!”

Harry’s interview with Rolling Stone made his single even more popular. Harry, who graced the cover of the May issue, gave his opinion on his audience. He speaks about his most popular audience, young teenage girls. Styles says, “Who’s to say that young girls who like pop-music—short for popular, right?—have worse musical taste than a 30-year-old hipster guy? That’s not up to you to say. Music is something that’s always changing. Young girls like the Beatles. You gonna tell me they’re not serious? How can you say young girls don’t get it? They’re our future… they kind of keep the world going. Teenage-girl fans—they don’t lie…They like you, and they tell you. Which is sick.

The future is looking bright for the former One Direction front man. “Harry Styles” will be released on May 12, and it is certain to make you think twice about his so-called “pop career.”
