Study Abroad Ambassadors Share Their Stories

Published: May 3rd, 2017

In the 2015-2016 academic year, 229 Brooklyn College students went abroad to 33 different destinations worldwide. While some participated in short-term programs in the summer or winter intersession, others studied abroad at Exchange Universities or went as free-movers. The International Education and Global Engagement Office asked two of its Study Abroad Ambassadors to share their greatest experiences. Here are their stories:

“My time spent in India was a unique experience in my educational path. Even as I’m removed from our travels to Jamkhed, Maharashtra, India, I find it difficult to fully express the appropriate words to describe my time abroad. Our Brooklyn College faculty-led program was nothing short of awesome, incredible, educational, eye-opening, perspective-changing and truly transformative. Yes, I was able to experience a culture unlike mine here in the Western Hemisphere, but more than that, I was able to meet the people of the villages that surround Jamhked. We studied the work of the Village Healthcare Worker and how they have changed the health outcomes with the help of the Comprehensive Rural Health Project (CRHP). CRHP opened their campus to our student group and served as our hosts and additional educators as we took an ethnographic look into the Indian way of life and the disparities that are present. Through anthropology, we were able to study a global health perspective as it relates to gender inequality and socioeconomic status. I will be able to take this unique experience with me throughout my health related studies.”

“I wish I could fully put in to words my experience in Ireland. The privilege to learn music from the people who are presently leading in the field while being in the environment with which the music was born was unlike anything I could have dreamed of. The ability to immerse yourself in another culture not only teaches you about your own culture, but teaches you about yourself and how you experience the world when you’re out of your comfort zone. It pushed me to new levels and I will forever be grateful for what I learned while studying.”
