“Bazinga!” Our favorite Monday night geeks are back for a whole new season of science, comedy and, most of all, surprises. Sept. 25 brought the eleventh season of “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS with many events that left fans in disbelief.
Throughout the episode, we see Sheldon (Jim Parsons) kiss another woman, but then propose to Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik). Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) is pregnant…again; Mr. and Mrs. Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki & Kaley Cuoco) forget their anniversary; and finally, Stuart (Kevin Sussman) has a date.
As the episode progresses, there is a constant shock-value, having fans ask a simple question: Where were the nerds who did everything out of the ordinary that we all fell in love with a decade ago?
The episode begins with a short recap of last season where we see Dr. Ramona Nowitzki (Riki Lindhome) kiss Sheldon, even though she was aware of the fact that he has a girlfriend, Amy. This incident makes Sheldon realize that he “didn’t want to kiss any other woman in his life that wasn’t Amy,” which he repeats throughout the episode.
Immediately after that incident, Sheldon boards the next plane out of Pasadena to go propose to Amy who is temporarily at Princeton University. Late at night, he knocks on Amy’s front door with his routine ‘knock-name’ trio. To our amazement, when the door opens, Sheldon is down on one knee with an engagement ring in his hands. Of course he first had to ask world-renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking for permission to propose to Amy.
Hawking’s blessing indicates to Sheldon that Amy is a suitable partner for him. Less important was getting the blessing from Amy’s father.
For ten seasons, the thought of Sheldon getting married seemed like a fantasy to fans worldwide, especially with all of his hiccups. Now, in one episode, Sheldon has two separate women fighting over him and is engaged, which his mother (Laurie Metcalf) claims is a “miracle!” Actually, taking into consideration what kind of character Sheldon is, it is not a claim…it’s a fact.
While Sheldon and Amy are overjoyed with their new engagement, the Wolowitz’s have their own freak-out when they learn that Bernadette is pregnant again. To their horror, they both do not understand how it is possible since “[they] were careful,” as they continuously say. Especially since they are not at all ready to have another child after just having their daughter, Halley, which was a nightmare of a pregnancy.
While The Wolowitz’s are panicking over a new baby, the Hofstadter’s are delighted knowing that they have nothing to worry about in their lives at this moment, even though they both forgot about their anniversary
As the only single member of the gang left, Raj (Kunal Nayyar), seeks out Stuart at the comic book store and hangs with him for the day looking for “a present for himself,” which was initially supposed to be an engagement gift for Sheldon and Amy. When Raj asks Stuart if he wants to do something that night, Stuart gives a shocking response: he has a date! Feeling all alone, Raj is saddened by the fact that all his friends, and now even Stuart, are not alone and are happy.
In the final scene of the episode we see Sheldon and Amy (who has been away for three months) return to Pasadena and meet the guys in the Cal Tech cafeteria. After their hellos, Amy spots Ramona across the cafeteria and decides to confront her, which cannot have a happy ending!
Just when you think you are about to witness one of the biggest ‘beat downs’ in sitcom, Amy walks up to Ramona and gives her a hug, saying thank you. Wait, what just happened? Something isn’t right here! Amy should be yelling at Ramona, not thanking her! One would think that after five-plus years of dating she would be furious with Sheldon kissing another woman, but instead she is happy? In Amy’s mind, Sheldon was never going to propose since that is a very hard thing to do for someone who is scared of commitment, so this kiss with Ramona sped up the process.
These moments of disbelief were more than any of us could imagine, and that’s just the first episode! The possibilities are endless as to what we will see in the upcoming season with these unpredictable scientists.
Every time we thought the curveballs were over, another one came straight towards us. Fans could never have imagined Sheldon proposing, let alone another pregnancy…at least right now. We can only hope that in the upcoming episodes the suspense is kept up, or at best, spread out so we don’t get too overwhelmed.
The new season of “The Big Bang Theory” will continue to air on Thursdays, beginning on November 2 at 8 p.m.
